MarediModa on Mission to Miami Swim Week

Claudio Taiana
, President of MarediModa, gave us some insight into the background and mission of his show.

Geared towards fashion and swimwear brands, MarediModa is intimate sourcing show of curated luxury European textile and trims exhibitors.

SWC: Mare di Moda is a very well known and appreciated trade show in Europe but I think many American brands might not be familiar as with it. Can you tell us a little bit about your trade show, who it is for?

CT: MarediModa is the most important international trade show in the beachwear sector. It takes place every year in Cannes, in November, and has reached this year the 18th edition. Only companies based in Europe can participate as exhibitors. Moreover, they must comply with quality requirements, creativity, respect for the environment, fairness and continuous presence in the beachwear market with a collection entirely dedicated for over three years. Every year, our selection committee receives a dozen applications that are carefully evaluated in light of the requirements above. In the last five years a percentage of 20% of the aspiring exhibitors has been admitted.

SWC : Why should they come to see you?

CT: Because they can see where fashion originates and how quality is still pursued with artisan or even artistic know-how. All this is accomplished through the most refined technology which allows to keep the costs incredibly low in relation to the quality standards and to the care we offer. We are the only credible alternative to the anonymous mass production which has characterized the beachwear industry since the rush to mass production from Far East has begun.

SWC: The trade show you are doing in Miami is similar to the one that you do in Cannes and Munich: a sourcing show. Do you have plans to expand it in the future?

CT: At the moment I would speak more of an exploratory mission than a trade show. We have deliberately selected 16 of our 120 exhibitors to verify the potential and the interest of the American market. Until 2000, it was the main market for our companies, however, it became extremely marginal in the following years for the sole motivation of the price.Today we have seen again the interest of the American consumer in quality products, exclusively manufactured with a great respect for people and for the environment. We are ready and well equipped for this. If the market responds positively we will certainly think of a trade show in the USA.

SWC: How is the show doing? How many suppliers do you have exhibiting?

CT: As I said we will be present with 16 companies, at the Boulan Hotel. A must-see proposal of textile and trim collections by a selection of companies from: Italy, France, Spain and United Kingdom. Elegant and sophisticated plains, unique and iconic prints, vibrant and fresh colors, jacquards, flock prints, laminated and metallic fabrics, laces, embroideries, fringes, sequins, precious trims,  innovative rubber-elastic tapes, hi-tech and sustainable fabrics. All you need for your outstanding collections of: beachwear & swimwear, underwear, athleisure, activewear & bodywear, resort wear and cruise wear.

SWC: Why do you think that the swimwear market is so popular?

CT: Swimsuit is a fundamental element to express our personality when we are just us and the sea. A simple swimsuit - only with its color, its shape, its quality, refinement and creative content- talks about us more than we can imagine.

What are some of the trends that we should be looking for?

MarediModa has the authority to define the trends of the sector. Thanks to MarediModa Trend Board, a team of professionals outlines the exclusive themes that are then revealed during MarediModa Cannes. In Miami we will present a preview of the 2021 collections. This year, the key word is DISRUPTIVE and the concept is well expressed by the intro to trends by David Shah, head of MarediModa Trend Board:

“We sense a rejection of convention and the status quo – a backlash against the fashion and design industry’s homogenisation. Life, the city and the future are going to be more interwoven and complex, whether we like it or not. These times are defined by confusion derived from this irreversible development. How to make sense of this shape-shifting urban fabric? What if we just accept it as a given fact? Society is entering an era of fluidity, and fashion must harness the potential of this fluidity by embedding it into every aspect of its offering. It must sculpt, engineer and redesign versions of reality catering for a consumer who is in constant flux. It’s time to step up on sustainability and innovation and step out of the ‘take-make-waste’ model to adopt an approach that is restorative and regenerative by design”.

What are you looking forward to the most during Miami Swim Week?

Finding clients - or better - partners who love beauty and exclusivity of product and put great attention on service. Partners who want to build a new fashion system with us respecting human beings, environment and creativity.

Anything else that you would like to add?

If you love beauty, we will be glad to give you the best.
